EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet)
Browse all Technology terms
The European Digital Identity Wallet is an EU government-backed digital identity system being piloted across member states that integrates zero-knowledge proofs to enable citizens to prove identity attributes without revealing full personal data, complying with GDPR privacy requirements and eIDAS 2.0 regulatory framework.
EUDI Wallets allow citizens to selectively disclose verified attributes such as age, professional qualifications, licenses, or residency status to service providers without exposing underlying identity documents or unnecessary personal information. The wallet uses zkSNARK cryptographic proofs enabling verification that a user meets specific criteria (e.g., over 18 years old, holds medical license, EU resident) while the verifying party learns only the confirmed attribute, not the user's full identity, birthdate, or document details.
Applications include bank account onboarding where customers prove identity and address without sharing passport copies, cross-border financial services requiring jurisdiction verification, mobile driver's license verification by authorities, and age-gated services. The EUDI Wallet framework aims to create interoperable digital identity infrastructure across all 27 EU member states, reducing identity fraud, streamlining KYC processes, and enhancing privacy protection in digital service delivery.
